Okay, I admit that I am slightly disappointed with Jack the Giant Slayer. I was expecting a little more out of it, and my expectations rose after watching Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters in January. After all, Bryan Singer is a director that I respect for his involvements in the first two X-Men films. However, I do not find the similar magic here in Jack the Giant Slayer.

Jack the Giant Slayer was highlighted as one of the films in 2013 which I was looking forward to. This film is also available in 2D and 3D. For the purpose of this review, I have selected the 3D version of the film in yesterday's session. Now before we proceed, let's have a look at some basic information of the film.
Jack the Giant Slayer

The graphics and cinematography are good but not spectacular. To be honest, there weren't many breath-taking moments during the film where effects are concerned. So, I'd probably recommend viewers to watch the 2D version instead since there weren't anything special with 3D. On top of that, the storyline's pretty predictable, you don't need to be a rocket scientist to guess what would happen next in the film.
Dialogues are rather cheesy (understandable, it is still based on a fairy tale), while some of the actors shine in their performances. Nicholas Hoult was rather believable in his lead role, so was Eleanor Tomlinson. It was good to see Nicholas playing a more confident role compared to his performance as Beast in X-Men: First Class. However, my favourite performances were from Ewan McGregor and Stanley Tucci. The chemistry between Ewan and Nicholas was enjoyable on screen - a little brotherly rivalry and respect.
I've also been a fan of Stanley Tucci in his more recent films such as Devil Wears Prada, Captain America and The Hunger Games. It was nice to see a more devilish and evil side of him. I do regard him as one of the more versatile and enigmatic actors in the industry. I do also find Stanley's character's evil 'side-kick' Wicke (played by Ewen Bremner) to be wickedly entertaining.
On a more positive note, it was good that the film played on the whole Giant invasion idea, just wished that there was a little more action between the two races, to perhaps elaborate on how truly terrifying these giants are. I quite like the costumes too, something about men in shiny armour that makes something in your blood boil a little. Oh, and the details on the giants are amazing as well. It was fun to see the different giants and to see them in action.
Overall, I find Jack the Giant Slayer mediocre at best. The film's intention appeared to be relying heavily on visual effects to elevate the film, but it has hardly made any impression on me. Unfortunately, Jack the Giant Slayer would most probably be just another fairy tale movie adaptation which will be forgotten when another movie is released next week.
