The KayElle Gazette has included The Last Stand in its previous post as a Movie Highlight of January 2013. After watching the film, KayElleGuy thinks that movie-goers who seek lots of action and comedy would appreciate what this film has to offer.
The opening scene has set the tone of the movie and tells viewers what you can expect out of the film - high-speed car chase and comic relief.
The Last Stand revolves around an average-guy hero - Sheriff Owens (Arnold Schwarzenegger), who has been serving in the police force for a long time and has opted out to be a sheriff in a small town after seeing much blood and death in his past.
The film is filled with action-packed scenes including close combat, gunfire and high-speed car chase. You can definitely count on lots of gun-firing scenes, and Grand Theft Auto-typed of action, with lots of blood and deaths. It is well-paced with scene transitions placed well to showcase parallel scenes during the same timeline in 3 different locations.
While The Last Stand is never going to wow you with an extensive plot, the story is simple, easy to follow and well-developed. The lighting and effects are considerably good considering that the budget of this film is only $30 million. Costumes are not breathtaking, but works for the occasion, and the use of music is fair to highlight moments of suspense as well as light-hearted moments throughout the film.
But let's face it, Arnold is not your stellar actor and to quote his character in the film, he is "old". Some of the dialogues are rather stiff, but some worked as comic relief, whether it is intended or not. Arnold is also backed by a surprisingly solid group of cast. There were moments when Forest Whitaker (as Agent John Bannister), Jaimie Alexander (as Sarah Torrance) as well as Eduardo Noriega (as Gabriel Cortez) shined during the film. On top of that, veteran Luis Guzman (as Mike Figuerola, who KayElleGuy also remembered for his excellent performance as the funny-man in Journey 2), Johnny Knoxville (as Lewis Dinkum) and Zach Gilford (as Jerry Bailey) have added much of the film's comedy element.
Overall, KayElleGuy thinks that The Last Stand is an enjoyable, light-hearted action movie IF you can get past the less-than-stellar acting by Arnold. Good for a few laughs and keeps you smiling after you've left the cinema.
